Interested in using union (SAG, AFTRA or Actor's Equity) talent in your student film?
Screen Actors Guild has a Student Film Agreement that allows you to work with professional actors on a deferred payment basis.
What does signing the Student Film Agreement mean for you?
- You will enhance your project by using professional actors.
- You will have the right to unlimited use in classrooms or film festivals.
- You will be able to pursue further distribution options BUT ONLY with the prior consent of performers and SAG (full payment may be required).
- You will be signing a legally binding contract with the Guild--this is NOT a waiver.
Important Tips to remember:
You must sign and submit the SAG Student Film Agreement BEFORE you start production. SAG, AFTRA and Equity members cannot work on your film unless you are signed to the Student Film Agreement. You must start the process AT LEAST ONE WEEK PRIOR to the start of your film--that includes rehearsals.
What will the Guild need from you?
- Student Film Application (signature from professor required)
- Signed Student Film Agreement
- A copy of your script
- A copy of your budget
- A copy of your shooting schedule
- A bond of $50, in the form of a money order, to be returned to you upon receipt of all required paperwork. Bond must be in the form of a money order--no cash, checks or credit cards.
It’s easy, but don’t forget...
- All of the above information MUST be submitted and approved by the Guild BEFORE you begin any work with professional performers.
- Union actors can’t work on your film until you complete the Student Film Agreement process.
- The process can’t be done overnight, so contact the Guild at least one week prior to the start of your film--including rehearsals.
- This is not a "waiver," but a legally binding contract.
If you should have any questions regarding the Agreement, your responsibilities as a SAG student film producer, or to request your SAG Student Film Agreement packet, please contact the Boston AFTRA/SAG Office at (617) 262-8001.
