The SAG Conservatory

The SAG Hollywood Conservatory offers training for developing methods that allow membership the opportunity to hone and develop their craft through classes, workshops, lectures and symposiums.

Conservatory Committee

The Conservatory Committee works on both national and local levels to encourage supervise and create programs through the Conservatory, which benefit SAG members.

Workshops

The workshops teach SAG actors how to attain essential tools their careers in a supportive, nurturing environment. Conservatory members are also eligible to perform in AFI student films, often gaining that vital first piece of actual on-camera experience.

A nominal registration fee is required to participate. The structured workshops are offered to members from October through May and cover the following:

  • On-camera commercial and theatrical techniques
  • Commercial & theatrical cold-reading techniques
  • Video scenes
  • Voice-overs
  • Improvisation
  • “Meet the Casting Director” seminars.

ROBERTA BASIN Sept 19

Course Taught: Improv/Audition Tech

Roberta has acted in a host of television and feature films including Barfly with Paul Newman, ER, Picket Fences, American Dreams and Crossing Jordan. She won an Emmy and Golden Globe for the MOW Indictment. She has been a wonderful presence with our young performers and is back by popular demand.


MARCO MARTINEZ Sept 26, Oct 10, 17, 24

Courses Taught: Learn to arc your scenes, Change Emotions in your work: get emotionally attached and 3 Keys to a Scene: Character, Objective and Obstacles

Marco has had a diverse entertainment career. He began as a rapper with his high school friend “Ice Cube.” He went on to record with singer Talib Kweli. After graduating with his Master’s degree from USC he pursued his acting full time landing spots on television and feature films including CSI: Miami, Westwing, Boston Legal, Cold Case, Criminal Minds and The Nine.

He is looking to give back his artistic and industry knowledge to our young performers.



PATRICIA SHANKS Oct 1 and Oct 31

Course Taught: Technique to uncover your authentic voice. Classes will include vocal and singing.

Patricia is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Music Teachers Association of California, Southern California Vocal Association and the Voice and Speech Trainers Association. Patricia has sung with the former Los Angeles Music Center Opera Association, Los Angeles Master Chorale (under Roger Wagner), Opera Pacific, and as soloist with numerous choral groups. She has performed before government dignitaries and in appearances with film and TV stars.

Known for her intuitive teaching abilities, Patricia has helped thousands of singers improve their skills and set a reliable vocal technique. She incorporates Sanford Meisner acting techniques.



GOKUL Nov 3, 10, 17

Course Taught: Accents/dialects/character choices

A Hollywood veteran, Gokul is experiencing his 26th year in the business. His resume includes national commercials, television shows and feature films. Some highlights include: Charlie Wilson’s War with Tom Hanks, Naked Gun 2 ∏, Eli Stone and NYPD Blue. He will work in helping the actors understand how to make unique character choices to include developing dialects.
